The gravest danger that can befall the Church is not persecution from without but the corruption of conscience from within. Throughout history the Church has confronted numerous external enemies; yet its deepest wounds have often arisen when those entrusted to safeguard the truth become its adversaries when those called to serve God’s people seek to dominate them and when those commissioned to bear witness to Christ become false witnesses against their own brethren.
Christ appointed shepherds to lead the people of God in love and truth not through deception falsehood or authoritarianism. Priestly ministry is not a personal privilege but a solemn responsibility for which every priest will one day give an account before God the righteous Judge.
“This then is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:1–2)
I. Falsehood as a Spiritual Crime Before It Is a Moral Sin
When a priest lies to the faithful or distorts facts before his ecclesiastical superiors he does not merely deceive human beings; he shows contempt for the truth itself which is Christ.
As Christ declared: “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6)
Therefore, falsehood is not merely an administrative error or a passing lapse in judgment; it constitutes a rebellion against the very message of the Gospel.
When a priest resorts to accusing the innocent or fabricating allegations against faithful servants in order to preserve his authority or public image he acts contrary to the spirit of Christ who defended the oppressed and never wronged anyone.
A true shepherd does not fear the truth; an unfaithful shepherd fears it because it exposes his deeds.
II. Lack of Financial Transparency as a Sign of a Crisis of Conscience
The resources of the Church do not belong to the priest the pastoral council or any individual regardless of position. They are sacred offerings entrusted by the faithful through their labor and confidence for the service of God’s house.
For this reason every refusal of financial transparency raises legitimate questions:
Why are financial records concealed?
Why are financial reports not presented clearly and openly?
Why are questions concerning finances treated as acts of rebellion or disobedience?
A faithful steward welcomes accountability because it confirms integrity. Those who fear the light however prefer to work in darkness.
As the Lord Jesus said: “Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.” (John 3:20)
Transparency is not an insult to the priest; rather it is a protection both for him and for the Church.
III. A Priest’s Campaign Against Faithful Servants Reveals Weak Leadership
When a priest begins to oppose sincere and faithful individuals who serve the Church with love and selflessness the problem does not lie with those servants but with the mentality of leadership itself.
A genuine servant rejoices when he sees capable and dedicated individuals working for the good of the Church.
A leader who perceives every faithful person as a threat to his position however will seek to discredit marginalize or isolate them.
Here the words of Scripture become particularly relevant: “Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” (Jeremiah 23:1)
The Church belongs to no individual and faithful servants are not enemies of the priest; they are partners in ministry. Whoever wages war against them ultimately opposes the very work for which God has called them.
IV. Can a Priest Lie Before the Altar?
This question is not merely administrative; it is profoundly theological and ethical.
The altar is the place of God’s presence. The Gospel is the word of truth. The Holy Eucharist is the mystery of Christ’s presence.
How then can a person stand before these sacred realities and speak what he knows to be false?
How can he raise his hands in prayer while his tongue utters deception?
The Lord strongly warned against those who honor Him with their lips while their hearts remain far from Him.
Scripture declares: “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” (Exodus 20:16)
It also states: “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord.” (Proverbs 12:22)
The altar is not a stage for self-promotion a venue for settling personal scores or a platform for misleading the faithful. Whoever transforms the altar into a means of advancing personal interests violates the sacred trust of the ministry entrusted to him by God.
V. Deceiving a Bishop Does Not Eliminate the Truth
Some individuals may succeed in misleading ecclesiastical authorities for a period of time. They may justify their actions or shift responsibility for their failures onto others.
Yet truth does not perish.
God sees what human beings cannot see and knows what remains hidden from earthly authorities.
As Scripture teaches: “There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed or hidden that will not be made known.” (Luke 12:2)
A person may deceive superiors or even an entire congregation but no one can deceive God.
Conclusion
The Church needs holy shepherds rather than power brokers and faithful servants rather than skilled practitioners of justification and deceit. Genuine ecclesiastical authority is not measured by the fear a leader instills in others but by the love trust and respect he leaves in the hearts of the faithful.
Ultimately every shepherd will stand before the throne of God and face these questions:
Were you a witness to the truth or merely a wielder of authority?
Did you build up the Church or divide its children?
Did you serve Christ or did you serve yourself?
On that day neither positions nor titles will matter. What will matter is fidelity to the truth who is Christ Himself.
Sadly the current state of unrest witnessed within this parish arising from the conduct of a priest serving in one of the churches affiliated with ………. Cathedral. did not emerge in a vacuum. Rather it is the result of accumulated tensions and unresolved issues that have affected the parish community over previous years.
We emphasize that what is currently being discussed represents only a portion of the broader picture. Additional details and facts remain to be presented and will be disclosed progressively.
