On Monday and Tuesday of Holy Week 2026, 55 students at Principia Upper School in St. Louis, Missouri, courageously answered the call to learn the basics of Chaldean Aramaic.

Bible Studies teacher, Evan MacDonald, using the books Classical Aramaic I and Read and Write Aramaic, taught the 22 consonants including Estrangela, 7 vowels, and the number system within the Chaldean alphabet.

By the end of the two days, students could read, write, and pronounce their own names in Chaldean as well know their names’ numerical value.
Evidence of the students understanding and enjoyment of learning Aramaic was found in the confidence gained in intellectual and spiritual growth which included learning about the culture and history of the Chaldeans, all the while getting credit for an art class for drawing the symbols of the ancient alphabet.

According to Chaldean scholars across the United States, this was one of the first times Chaldean Aramaic was taught at a high school in the Chaldeans adopted homeland of the United States of America.
Given the joy and enthusiasm of the Principia students to learn more about Chaldeans and their beautiful Aramaic language, we look forward to seeing more Eastern Aramaic classes taught at high schools throughout America.
