Chaldean Triumph: “Pomegranate” Celebrates Iraqi Heritage on the Big Screen for the First Time

Pomegranate, the first full-length feature film by an Iraqi-American, tells the story of two neighboring families from Baghdad, Iraq, – one Muslim, one Chaldean Christian, – currently living in Sterling Heights, Michigan. A romantic comedy with deep cultural lessons, writer and director, Weam Namou, shows great courage in displaying Chaldean identity and resilience.

Produced by Chaldean veteran Hollywood filmmaker Sam Sako, whose many credits include Man with One Red Shoe with Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, Pomegranate uses Middle Eastern acting talent such as Sam Rahmani, Zain Shami, and Ismail Taher, to tell its story.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that Pomegranate’s release in 25 countries on all cable, satellite, and digital platforms, including AppleTV and PrimeVideo, on March 4th, 2025, coincides with National Women’s History Month in the United States.Pomegranate creatively and tactfully deals with contemporary women issues such as dating and wearing the hijab. Pomegranate celebrates women-led talent both in front of, and behind the camera, and has won over 40 international film awards.
Pomegranate is the first of author Weam Namou’s 20+ books to be turned into a feature narrative film. She previously wrote and directed a feature documentary, The Great American Family. For those of you who prefer to read the book first, Pomegranate is available through all major distributors, including Weam’s website www.weamnamou.com.  After reading the book, Pomegranate, and seeing the movie, fans and audience members alike will be eagerly awaiting Weam Namou’s next offering.
